			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p> My son is going off to college is just a few short weeks. We are sending a microwave oven with him for cooking.  He has never learned to cook on his own.  He would be a perfect example of someone that cannot boil water.  He can tear apart a carburetor, repair bike tires, tie his fishing ties but the kid cannot boil water.  Oh well, perhaps that is a bit severe, he could probably boil water but what to do next would dumbfound him.</p>
<p> I am glad to see that there are many microwave cooking products on the commercial market today.  With this knowledge, I know that he will not starve.  I also am guaranteed that he will appreciate every home cooked meal he enjoys when he comes home to visit.  I am also fairly confident that he will be more than willing to learn to cook for himself once he has enjoyed microwave cooking during the entire first semester of college.</p>
<p> In a recent grocery-shopping trip, I tried explaining to him how the coupon system works, how to purchase items in bulk and how to save money on different products, his eyes glazed over with disinterest.  I smiled to myself because I, too, was once eighteen and I remember believing my parent   s knew very little compared to my own personal vast knowledge.  I also remember realizing how smart my parents were and how little I actually knew once high school and family were hundreds of miles away.</p>
<p> How Times Have Changed When It Comes To Microwave Cooking</p>
<p> We did not do much microwave cooking in my day.  We did not have the luxury of microwave specific foods and packaging like they do today.  The opportunity to buy individually wrapped breakfast burritos, macaroni and cheese bowls, teriyaki chicken bowls and other prepared frozen foods were not as readily available.  So many food companies today create snack foods and individual meals with college students and kids in mind.  I tried to explain to him that these specially wrapped convenience foods are often very expensive.  He doesn   t believe me when I tell him that college is a time of personal growth and poverty for most college students.  He will learn.  I did.  </p>
<p> So for now, we will send him on his life.  I have packed him cartons of top ramen (he loves it) and a specialty cookbook discussing the hundreds of ways that you can prepare top ramen noodles into quality meals.  We bought him a microwave and all the necessary cookware and supplies he will need to stock his first kitchen.  I don   t know if I packed enough Tupperware.  We will undoubtedly be sending him many care packages once he arrives.  Mostly though, I will probably have to send money.  He cannot live on microwave cooking alone.</p>

In the early 20th century, the family meal was monumental to the family unity.  Yet, in recent years, the speed of life has taken off as rapidly as the speed of technology and we have lost the focus on the family unit.  The concept of fitting more activity into a twenty-four hour period has consumed the American ideal of productivity and with that change in mindset; we have lost sight of our basic American values.  We sing about home cooking in country music, we talk about its importance in televised therapy sessions and we advertise it on television commercials but we still cannot manage to get everyone to the dinner table to at the same time.  </p>
<p> What Went Wrong With Home Cooking?</p>
<p> The act of bringing the family together for a home cooked meal is not a new concept in the American culture, however it is one that has suffered greatly in recent years.  At one time, every member of the immediate family gathered around the dinner table to enjoy family conversation and a home cooked meal.  It was considered a family heirloom to pass down recipes to each female member of the family, teaching the young girls how to prepare a home cooked meal.  Today, with ten hour work days, two income families, over committed athletic teams and other demands on family members time, we seem to be losing the image of a family joined together for the family meal.</p>

I was young, on a date and very impressed with everything.  When most people mention fine cooking they are referring to the type of restaurant that caters to grown-ups.  Happy meals are definitely not on the menu.  </p>
<p> Most fine cooking and dining restaurants have elegant seating areas and dining rooms, filled with antiques and expensive artwork.  The music is subtle but artistic and the male waiters whisper to the guests so as not to disturb other guests.  It is very formal, very important and very expensive.  These fine dining restaurants are generally rated with stars or diamonds and the highest aim is usually a five-star rating.</p>
<p> When Did Fine Cooking Dining Get So Stuffy?</p>
<p> I have been to a number of fine dining restaurants in my adult life since that first experience at the French restaurant so many years ago.  While elegant, I have grown to find them stuffy.  Perhaps it is the mother in me but I find all that quiet a bit disturbing.  My husband often has to    shush    me because I start to giggle with all the quiet and seriousness that occurs in most of these types of restaurants.  I always find that there is never enough food to fill my appetite.  Why is it that fine cooking has to be done in such small portions?  </p>
<p> Once my husband I went to an extremely expensive fine dining establishment that had just been built in our city.  The menu had many different finely cooked items to choose from, so my husband and I each ordered appetizers, an entr  e and dessert.  We had been told that the Chef   s fine cooking of nouveau cuisine was beyond compare.  We were both amazed when the meal arrived and each of the items was so small that my husband and I had to go through a drive-thru on the way home.  We still laugh about the fact that those portions were so small they would not have been enough to feed our then one-year-old son.</p>
<p> My Fine Dining Day Are Done, Bring On The Happy Meals</p>
<p> I must admit, that my days as a nouveau cuisine customer are over; fine cooking of the nouveau cuisine style has no place in my dietary future.  I am happy dining in a restaurant known for its happy meals with my children laughing beside me.  I am no longer impressed with five stars unless one of my children has drawn them in a picture.  Fine dining to me is defined as a picnic in the backyard with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Popsicles and the ones I love to share them with.</p>
